About South Australia's Macropod Rescue Sanctuary

SA law prohibits releasing hand-raised macropods—creating urgent need for lifelong sanctuaries. Rural gaps in 24/7 rescue, habitat loss, culling leave orphans without options. Pouchie.z fills this: Evidence-based care, environmental conservation, community and education, thriving in coexistence.

The Gap We Fill

Pouchie.z Kangaroo Sanctuary & Wildlife Rescue Limited is an ACNC‑registered, DGR‑endorsed environmental charity (ABN 17 687 974 223) based in Monarto South, South Australia. We operate a 24/7 native wildlife rescue hotline, responding to around 100 calls each year, and provide specialised rehabilitation and lifelong sanctuary care for injured, orphaned, or unreleasable macropods—kangaroos and wallabies that, under South Australian DEW policy, cannot be returned to the wild.

About Pouchie

"Hi, I’m Pouchie, the founder and director of Pouchie.z Kangaroo Sanctuary & Wildlife Rescue. My passion for this work began in childhood, visiting family friends who ran a wildlife sanctuary, where I first saw the desperate need for orphaned joeys to have a safe, enriched haven. Those early experiences shaped my life’s purpose: to provide vulnerable wildlife with the care, stability, and compassion they deserve.

The journey to establish Pouchie.z was not without challenges. I made the difficult decision to leave my job as a disability support worker to pursue this calling full‑time. That season of transition positioned me perfectly to launch a 24/7 native wildlife rescue hotline and create a dedicated sanctuary for injured and orphaned macropods.

Today, l dedicate my life as an unpaid volunteer, making myself available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to rescue calls, provide intensive joey care, and oversee the ongoing development of our 87‑acre sanctuary. My goal is to turn compassion into practical, sustainable environmental conservation that protects individual animals and the bushland they depend on, giving every joey and macropod in our care the best possible chance to heal, belong, and thrive."

Located on our 87‑acre property, including 60 acres of native heathland, the sanctuary features purpose‑built facilities such as rehabilitation compounds, sheltered feeding areas, a critical care unit, and a joey crèche. Here, our team provides expert nutrition, veterinary, and parasitology care (with over six years of specialist experience), helping joeys form healthy mob bonds and develop natural behaviours in a safe environment.

Our 24/7 hotline enables rapid emergency response, assessment, and transport across South Australia, bridging critical rural rescue gaps. Non‑macropod species are stabilised, triaged, and released or referred to appropriate carers, while macropods requiring permanent care live out their lives within our monitored sanctuary compounds.

We are progressively expanding the sanctuary with upgrades to our joey crèche, additional 10–20‑acre habitat compounds, improved water and feeding infrastructure, and ongoing native revegetation and firebreak projects. All operations are entirely self‑funded and volunteer‑run, ensuring 100% of DGR‑deductible donations directly benefit wildlife and conservation.

Beyond rescue and care, we’re committed to conservation education and volunteer training, promoting best‑practice macropod welfare, responsible coexistence, and community stewardship of South Australia’s native wildlife. Your support helps us protect and restore habitats, safeguard kangaroos and wallabies, and continue building a more compassionate future for our wildlife.

Our Sanctuary

A South Australia where native wildlife is protected, habitats are restored, and community conservation is both a shared responsibility and an enduring legacy.
