About Us

Pouchie.z Kangaroo Sanctuary & Wildlife Rescue is an ACNC‑registered, nonprofit environmental charity based in Monarto South, South Australia. The sanctuary provides 24/7 native wildlife rescue and specialist rehabilitation and lifelong sanctuary for injured, orphaned, and unreleasable macropods—kangaroos and wallabies who cannot safely return to the wild.

Located on an 87‑acre privately owned bush property with extensive native heathlands, the sanctuary combines species‑specific animal care with habitat conservation and landcare. Purpose‑built sanctuary compounds, feed shelters, and a dedicated joey crèche provide secure, naturally enriched spaces where macropods receive specialised nutrition, veterinary‑supported care, and the chance to form healthy mob bonds and express natural behaviours throughout their lives.

Pouchie.z operates a 24/7 wildlife rescue hotline for regional and rural South Australia, offering emergency call‑outs, on‑site assessment, and transport for injured, orphaned, or at‑risk native animals. Many species are stabilised and supported through triage and rehabilitation, while unreleasable macropod joeys transition into long‑term sanctuary care within the macropod compounds, where their physical and emotional wellbeing is closely monitored.

Guided by a staged conservation and business plan, the sanctuary is expanding its infrastructure to meet growing demand. Current and planned projects include completing a critical care and joey crèche unit, extending macropod compounds across additional restored habitat, enhancing water and feed infrastructure, and scaling native planting and land‑care works to regenerate the surrounding environment.

Alongside direct animal care, Pouchie.z advances conservation education, community engagement, and volunteer training, sharing evidence‑based macropod welfare practices and promoting responsible coexistence with native wildlife. Through this integrated model of 24/7 rescue, rehabilitation, lifelong macropod sanctuary, and environmental regeneration, the organisation works to protect South Australia’s wildlife, restore habitats, and inspire a deeper culture of environmental stewardship.

Mission Statement

Pouchie.z Kangaroo Sanctuary & Wildlife Rescue exists to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong sanctuary for injured, orphaned, and unreleasable macropods in South Australia, while protecting native wildlife and restoring their habitats. Through a 24/7 native wildlife rescue hotline, specialised macropod care, habitat regeneration, and community conservation education, the sanctuary works to close critical service gaps and safeguard Australia’s unique ecosystems.

Why We Exist

Pouchie.z was created to respond to the growing number of native animals—especially kangaroo and wallaby joeys—left orphaned or injured by road trauma, habitat loss, and human activity, with few options for specialised, long‑term care. In South Australia, many hand‑raised macropods cannot safely return to the wild, so there is an urgent need for dedicated sanctuary spaces that can support them across their natural lifespan.

The sanctuary exists to meet this need by combining evidence‑based animal welfare, environmental restoration, and community education so that vulnerable wildlife are not only rescued, but given the chance to heal, belong, and thrive.

About Me

Hi, I’m Pouchie, the founder and director of Pouchie.z Kangaroo Sanctuary & Wildlife Rescue. My passion for this work began in childhood, visiting family friends who ran a wildlife sanctuary, where I first saw the desperate need for orphaned joeys to have a safe, enriched haven. Those early experiences shaped my life’s purpose: to provide vulnerable wildlife with the care, stability, and compassion they deserve.

The journey to establish Pouchie.z was not without challenges. After the onset of the COVID‑19 pandemic and a period of significant mental‑health struggles, I made the difficult decision to leave my job as a disability support worker. During that season of healing and reflection, I realised I was being called to devote my skills and energy to urgently needed environmental conservation by running a 24/7 native wildlife rescue hotline and creating a dedicated sanctuary for injured and orphaned macropods.

Today I serve as an unpaid, full‑time volunteer, making myself available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to rescue calls, provide intensive joey care, and oversee the ongoing development of our 87‑acre sanctuary. My goal is to turn compassion into practical, sustainable environmental conservation that protects individual animals and the bushland they depend on, giving every joey and macropod in our care the best possible chance to heal, belong, and thrive.
