Where Hope Hops

Pouchie.z Kangaroo Sanctuary & Wildlife Rescue is a non‑profit charity in South Australia, providing a 24/7 wildlife rescue hotline for injured native animals.

Specialising in intensive macropod care, we give orphaned and injured kangaroos and wallabies lifelong sanctuary and a second chance at life.

In South Australia, current wildlife policy restricts the release of rehabilitated macropods, including kangaroos and wallabies, back to the wild.

With very limited lifelong sanctuary options, many joeys have nowhere safe to go. Your support creates permanent, species‑appropriate sanctuary for the macropods who cannot return to the wild.

Meet Ruby

Ruby was still in her mother’s pouch when a car hit and killed her mother on a South Australian road. A well‑meaning member of the public took Ruby home illegally and attempted to raise her, never seeking advice or veterinary care.

By the time she reached our sanctuary, Ruby was dangerously underweight and severely malnourished. X‑rays and CT scans revealed multiple untreated fractures to her skull, eye socket, and jaw, and several fractures in her foot – injuries she had been living with untreated, in excruciating pain.

Ruby was terrified of other kangaroos. Having been raised in solitary away from her own kind, she didn’t recognise other macropods or know how to be part of a mob.

Because her jaw will never close properly, Ruby will need ongoing surgeries, specialised feeds, and lifelong sanctuary support to eat and live comfortably.

Despite all of this, Ruby has fought hard to survive. In a calm, species‑appropriate sanctuary setting, Ruby has gained weight, now thriving at 16 kg, and has learnt to feel safe within her own mob.

Ongoing support ensures Ruby, and joeys like her, receive the specialised care and lifelong sanctuary they will always need.
